Born in Brightwell, October 1882 and enlisting in Wallingford he was killed in action 17 February 1917, aged 34.
Elder brother of John Butcher, also killed in action.Son of George and Ruth Butcher of Brightwell Street. Husband of Mary Butcher, Little Lane, Brightwell. In 1901 Joseph had left the village and was working as a market garden labourer in Harmondsworth, along with a William Belcher, age 25yrs, also from Brightwell. By 1911 Joseph had become a bricklayer, married Mary and had two sons. Alfred George 5yrs and Joseph 1yr.
