John Hazel Lay

Private 7510, 45th Battalion Australian Infantry

1894 - 1918

Laid to rest: Vignacourt British Cemetery, Somme (Grave VE3)

Born in Sotwell July 1894 he was killed in action 10 August 1918, aged 23.

Elder son of Richard Bradfield and Martha Emily Lay, Sotwell Manor Husband of Ruby E L Lay of Hill View, Wallsend, NSW Australia. In the 1901 census when John Hazel was only 6, the family were living with his widowed grandmother, Sarah Hazel at ‘The Manor’ Pennygreen Lane and it was Sarah who was the fruit grower. One of John’s younger brothers, Hubert Francis, became the father of Peter and Philip Lay, both of whom many villagers will remember. Peter married Rene (Irene) who still serves us with their delicious fruit - produced now by son Richard, helped by his wife Lesley, at the family business on the High Road.
