Born in Brightwell, May 1892, he was killed in action 18 September 1918, aged 26.
Son of George and Ruth Butcher of Little London, Brightwell. Younger brother of Joseph Butcher also killed in action. In 1901, when John was 8yrs old, the family’s address was the Village Street. Both parents were agricultural labourers, as were teenage sons Tom and Harry. Elder brother Joseph, then 18yrs, had moved out to Harmondsworth and was working as a market garden labourer. In 1911 the family were living in Mackney Lane and John, 18yrs, was a farm labourer.
