Born Youghal, Co. Cork and enlisted in Reading he was killed in action 16 May 1916, aged 24.
Son of Ernest Albert and Mary Harvey of The Square, Brightwell. (Actually one of the two cottages backing on to ‘The Loop’ as it was called then.) Ernest Edward’s father was a sergeant serving until 1901 with the Royal Berkshires in Ireland where he met and married Mary Kilduff, born in Athlone – he then signed up again in 1914. They had twelve children (eleven boys and one girl), Ernest Edward being the second eldest, born in 1892. The one girl, Elsie, who was born in 1903, many of us will remember as Mrs Rumble who lived in one of the Wellsprings cottages and was a standard bearer for the village British Legion for some years. In 1911 Ernest Edward was working as a gardener but then, following in his father’s footsteps, joined the Royal Berkshire Regiment. Mrs Georgie Cave is the granddaughter of George Harvey, one of Ernest Edward’s younger brothers.
